Indian Health Service is a division of the United States Department of Health and Human Services. The division provides health programs for American Indians and Alaska natives. It is designed to assist tribes in developing health programs through such activities as training in health management, technical assistance and development of human resources. It also aids tribes in coordinating health planning, obtaining and using health resources available through federal, state and local programs and operating health care services and health programs. The department provides comprehensive health care services, including hospital and ambulatory medical care, preventive and rehabilitative services and development of community sanitation facilities. In addition, the division offers federal advocacy in the health field to ensure comprehensive health services for Indian people. Indian Health Service maintains a location in Rockville, Md.
