Located in Baltimore, Maryland Institute for Emergency Medical Services Systems oversees and coordinates all components of emergency medical services system in accordance with Maryland statute and regulation that includes planning, operations, evaluation and research. In addition, the institute provides leadership and medical direction; conducts and supports emergency medical services educational programs; operates and maintains a communications system; designates trauma and specialty centers; licenses and regulates commercial ambulance services; and participates in emergency medical services-related public education and prevention programs. The system operates trauma, consultation and several specialty centers, including the Baltimore Regional Burn Center, the Johns Hopkins Pediatric Trauma Center, the Wilmer Eye Institute, and the Neurotrauma and Hyperbaric Medicine Centers.
