The Montgomery County Resource Recovery Facility, located in Dickerson, Maryland, is an award-winning Waste-to-Energy Facility owned by Montgomery County. With a commitment to sustainable waste management, the facility processes over 560,000 tons of waste annually, reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 453,000 metric tons of CO2 and producing 63 megawatts of electricity, enough to power 30,000 homes for a year. Additionally, the facility recovers 13,700 tons of metal for recycling each year.
Operating well below emissions limits, the facility ensures superior environmental performance, with over 99.9 percent of emissions consisting of air components like water vapor, nitrogen, oxygen, and carbon dioxide. The remaining constituents are well below federal and state standards. Through the Waste-to-Energy process, non-hazardous waste is combusted to generate steam for electricity generation, with ash processed to recover metal for recycling and gases collected, filtered, and released safely into the atmosphere.
