With more than 120,000 regular readers, the Afro-American Newspapers is a leading news provider for African-Americans in the Baltimore/Washington, D.C., metropolitan area. It is also the longest running African-American, family-owned newspaper in the nation. The Afro-American Newspaper was founded in 1892 by former slave John H. Murphy Sr. after merging his church publication with two other church publications. Since that time, the newspaper has grown to cover a variety of news, sports, entertainment, health, editorials and black history. Afro-American Newspapers is based out of Baltimore.
