The Center for Cooperative Aquaculture Research (CCAR) is a state-of-the-art aquaculture facility located on a stunning 25-acre property in Franklin, Maine. With a rich history dating back to 1989, the facility has undergone modernization and expansion, incorporating innovative recirculating technologies and waste water treatment systems. The CCAR is dedicated to research, business incubation, and the production of marine fish juveniles, constantly evolving and growing to meet the needs of the aquaculture industry.
Since its acquisition by the University of Maine in 1999, the CCAR has made significant advancements, including the construction of the Maine Aquaculture Business Incubator (MABI) building in 2003 and the Taunton Bay Hatchery in 2005. With close to 100,000 square feet of lab and tank space, the CCAR continues to be at the forefront of aquaculture research and development, pioneering the rearing of new species such as California yellowtail in Maine.
