History
The Oakland House was opened on July 4th, 1889. The original homestead was enlarged dramatically from a small 2-story colonial 8 room house to a huge, 3-story, mansard roofed Victorian sort of Maine coast inn. This property has never been out of the family as it was an original grant from King George of England in 1767. Over the years, the innkeeper's children and then their children became the innkeepers. Now, there are 8 cottages in distinctive, authentic one-of-a-kind designs welcoming families, couples, and singles. The old ice house now has six private rooms. In recent years, the Acorn was rented per room, hostel-style, but this practice ceased last summer, during the pandemic. Still, we kept the names of the separate rooms, all named after local wildlife. Today, this is a peaceful 60 acre retreat along the shore of East Penobscot Bay. Some things never change, others do...making things even better.
