Hunter Cove Wildlife Sanctuary is a 100-acre forested sanctuary located in Rangeley, Maine. It offers 1.5 miles of easy, flat trails with several loop options, leading to a beautiful section of Hunter Cove on Rangeley Lake. The sanctuary is known for its abundance of habitats for songbirds, wading birds, and amphibians, as well as a deer wintering area, making it a popular destination for bird-watching, snowshoeing, and backcountry skiing.
Acquired by the Maine Audubon Society in 1974 and later donated to the RLHT (Rangeley Lakes Heritage Trust) in 2004, Hunter Cove Wildlife Sanctuary is dedicated to local stewardship and proper management. The sanctuary follows the principles of Leave No Trace, encouraging visitors to plan ahead, travel on durable surfaces, dispose of waste properly, leave what they find, minimize campfire impacts, respect wildlife, and be considerate of other visitors.
