Bowdoin College is an independent, nonsectarian institution that was founded in 1794. It is a coeducational, residential college that offers instruction in more than 40 departmental and interdisciplinary subjects. Bowdoin College offers enrollment of more than 1,700 students in various courses, including African studies, history, geology, archaeology, chemistry, visual arts, physics, Asian studies, biochemistry, biology and Latin American studies. In addition, it offers Italian, German, Spanish, Russian and French as foreign languages. The college offers various sports activities, such as basketball, cross country, softball, ice hockey, rugby, soccer, squash, swimming and diving, tennis, indoor and outdoor track and field, golf and volleyball.
