Jefferson Parish Louisiana was established in 1825 and was named in honor of Thomas Jefferson. There are many activities in the area for residents and visitors to participate in, such as recreational and nature watching opportunities; fishing boats that can be chartered from many of the local marinas; some of the oldest fishing rodeos in the country; a variety of water sports; the Bayou Signette state park; shopping malls, movie theatres and area casinos allow visitors to shop, dance dine and gamble; sporting and cultural activities go on year round that include games at Zepher stadium and the Alario Center or visits to the Jefferson Performing Arts Society, which offers a variety of classical and contemporary theatrical productions; Rivertown's Mardi Gras Museum; Jazzland, a newest theme park; and the world acclaimed historic French Quarter.
