HistoryBurden Museum & Gardens began in the late 1800s as Windrush Plantation. The home and property were passed down through the generations to the three children of William Pike Burden Sr. and Ollie Steele Burden: Ione Easter Burden, William Pike Burden Jr. and Ollie Steele Burden. In 1966, love for their family and ancestral home inspired Ione Burden, Steele Burden and Jeannette Monroe, the surviving spouse of William Pike Burden Jr., to preserve Windrush by creating a place that would foster agricultural and horticultural research, provide a destination for generations to appreciate and learn about Louisiana's rich rural and cultural heritage and give people a place to experience the beauty of the natural world. In all, the LSU AgCenter Botanic Gardens consists of five specialty gardens, multiple walking trails, a Black Swamp boardwalk and two event facilities.
