The Early Childhood Laboratory, established in 1928, is a university-based center operated by the Department of Early Childhood, Special Education and Counselor Education within the College of Education. Accredited by NAEYC and with a 5 Star Rating through KY All STARS, the ECL serves as a model early childhood program in the community, offering programs for children 6 weeks to 5 years, serving as a teacher-training site for future early childhood teachers, and conducting research in child development and early childhood education.
The ECL believes in active learning and development as a process, providing a safe environment that encourages children's active involvement in the learning process, promotes home-school continuity, and enhances their cognitive, emotional, physical, and social development. With inclusive programs, children with and without disabilities may be enrolled, and modifications and adaptations are made as needed. Lead teachers have or are working toward a Master's Degree in early childhood education or child development, and the ECL staff includes a faculty director, a staff director, and teaching assistants.
