As a leader of the criminal justice system in Jefferson County, Ky., an attorney from the Office of the Commonwealths Attorney is responsible for felony prosecution in 13 of the circuit courts in the 30th Judicial District. In 2005, the staff of approximately 100 people, which included more than 45 prosecutors, handled 3,853 new felony prosecutions, making the Office of the Commonwealths Attorney the busiest felony prosecutorial office in Kentucky. Within the office there are nine prosecutorial divisions. The Office of the Commonwealths Attorney is supported by approximately 10 detectives who help investigate cases. These detectives also serve subpoenas and warrants and locate witnesses for the prosecution. In October 1997, the office took over all fugitive retrieval duties for Louisville and St. Matthews, Ky. In July 2002, the department s detectives also took over all fugitive and extradition duties for all of metropolitan Louisville, which was formerly served by the Jefferson County Police.
