Barren River Lake was created by an earth and rock fill dam built across the Barren River by the Louisville District U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. It features facilities for land- and water-based recreation, such as camping, fishing, boating, hunting, picnicking, swimming and sightseeing. Barren River Lake was constructed for the purpose of reducing flood damage on the Barren River. The lake covers an area of more than 9,500 acres at summer pool and over 20,000 acres at the maximum flood control pool. It is managed by the Louisville District U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, which is also responsible for the preservation and maintenance of wildlife, fisheries and recreational areas in the lake.
