Colby Supply and Manufacturing Co DBA Colby Canvas Company was started in colby in 1927. It has operated out of several buildings since that time. Our dad, John M. Molstad purchased the business from Warren and Harold Hills in the early 1960's. It was on East 4th Street at that time. Form there it was moved to 285 East Third Street, our current location. The Molstad brothers have continued to operate the business since 1983 and have had as many as fifteen employees and have now 6 full-time and 2-3 part-time employees working 20-30 hours a week. Summer help is required and another 1-2 people are hired over the summer to assist with harvest and tent rentals.Colby Canvas Company is a full-service industrial sewing and fabrication value-added manufacturing firm. Tarps for grain trailers and farm trucks are products made all year long, but more in harvest season for custom harvesters. Many boat covers are made annually and oil field shelters are made in the winter for drilling rigs. Currently, awnings, banners, and signs comprise a great percentage of the sales. Awning frames are made from extruded aluminum and welded in our shop. Fabric is stretched and signage is added from our in-house graphics and design department which was added to the firm in 2003. We own a 55-foot bucket truck that we use to service, repair, or replace signs or awnings for business fronts, homes, or large signs. We put together simple membrane roof panels for area contractors and do some installation, as well. Spring brings in the tent rentals for anything from weddings, pheasant shoots, reunions, and church revivals. We have tents that we have made from 10'x10' to our largest 40'x100'. Our business takes us from South Dakota to Oklahoma and to Colorado and Missouri. We ship to virtually every state and several foreign countries. U.P.S and the U.S. Postal Service pick up packages every day as well as several truck lines. Our business is very diversified. We are capable of doing many things and we serve a large area. We pride ourselves on the quality work that we do and we use only the best of materials, U.S. made, to make our end products. There is a lot of competition in our industry and we have become well-known for our long existence in business and in this geographical area. We are members of the industrial fabrics association international and we attend the conventions to stay apprised of the latest innovations in the fabric industry.
