History
In the early days of the credit union movement, credit union employees were not allowed to join the credit union at which they worked. This meant the people who most believed in the credit union philosophy were unable to take advantage of the benefits the credit union offered. In 1936, this situation changed with the chartering of Kansas Federal Credit Union, whose field of membership included any employee/volunteer of a credit union or credit union association and members of their families. Kansas Federal Credit Union served in this unique capacity until the late 1970's when legislation was changed to permit credit union employees/volunteers to join the credit unions at which they worked or volunteered. Following this legislative change, Kansas Federal Credit Union changed from a federal to a state charter, and in 1979, changed its name to Mid American Credit Union.
