Camp Funston
Camp Funston, located on the Fort Riley military reservation near Junction City, Kansas, was the largest divisional cantonment training camp built during World War I. With over 40,000 soldiers from the U.S. Army's 89th Division stationed at the camp, it resembled more of a city than an army camp, offering various amenities such as general stores, theaters, social centers, infirmaries, libraries, schools, workshops, and even a coffee roasting house. The camp's main purpose was to train soldiers drafted from Midwestern states for overseas combat. Soldiers spent their time drilling and learning new military techniques, with officers from other countries brought in to train them. Despite the challenges of communicable diseases, Camp Funston played a crucial role in preparing soldiers for war and later became a mustering-out center before being decommissioned in 1924.Generated from the website
