Established in 1937, the Kansas Highway Patrol is a full-service law enforcement agency that reduces the number and severity of traffic crashes through the enforcement of impaired driving and occupant protection laws. Its patrol section deters motorists from impaired driving and arrests impaired drivers through countermeasures, such as selective enforcement efforts and sobriety check lanes. The Kansas Highway Patrol employs a staff of more than 800 sworn officers. The agency also handles cases related to aggressive drivers, commercial vehicle regulations, concealed weapons and weapon transportation. In addition, it undertakes seat belts and child safety inspections. With a location in Topeka, Kan., the Kansas Highway Patrol enhances public relations through local community involvement in schools, civic organizations and businesses.
