I am an optometrist who has enjoyed working with children who have reading disabilities for 30 years. One of the major etiologies that I diagnose & treat is a visual condition called convergence excess. This is a medical condition of the eyes. With this condition both eyes point or aim inside of where they are focused (unable to focus and aim at the same point at the same time). This is a fine-motor crossing of the eyes (gross-motor being observably crossed eyes). It creates a reduced fine-motor skill problem in tracking at near tasks such as reading.
