Spencer Municipal Utilities provides municipally owned utilities, including water, electricity, telephone, cable television and Internet access to the residents of Spencer, Iowa. The agency s water utility division was established in 1886 with a 400-foot deep artesian well powered by a wind pump. The division explores new sites for wells and increases treatment capacity. Its electric utility division produces wind energy from Hancock County Wind Farm, as well as offers electricity through nonpolluting hydroelectric stations. Spencer Municipal Utilities cable television division provides basic, expanded basic, digital cable and high-definition cable packages. The agency s SMU Telephone offers local and long-distance service, as well as international calling programs.
