Norwalk Map
Norwalk is a city in Polk and Warren counties in the U.S. state of Iowa. The population was 6,884 at the 2000 census. The city is part of the Des Moines–West Des Moines Metropolitan Statistical Area and is located just south of the Des Moines International Airport.
The first log cabin to be built in the area that was to become known as Norwalk was built in 1852 by Samuel Snyder. The first name for the area was Pyra. In 1856 the area was platted by George M. Swan, who became the second postmaster, and changed the name to Norwalk, as he was from Norwalk, Ohio.
Norwalk was incorporated in 1900 with a land area of 1.0 square mile (2.6 km2) and elected Adam Stiffer the first mayor. Another source has the date of incorporation as June 15, 1901.
