Estherville Meteorite, located in Estherville, IA, is home to the largest known meteorite to have fallen in North America. On May 10, 1879, this 455-pound meteorite struck the ground, burying itself 15 feet deep. Portions of the meteorite can be found on display at the Estherville Public Library, the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History, and the Naturhistorisches Museum in Vienna, Austria.
In addition to the meteorite, Estherville also boasts a stunning sculpture inspired by the event. Created by sculptor Tom Gibbs, the Estherville Meteorite sculpture captures the spirit of the meteor's impact, appearing as an exploding mass breaking into three pieces. Visitors can explore and learn more about the meteorite by picking up a brochure at the Chamber Office or by visiting the Meteorite Center, where a piece of the meteorite is on display.
