With station locations in Ames, Iowa, the Ames Fire Department was organized in 1895 as a volunteer fire department. It employs a staff of more than 50 uniformed personnel, including a fire chief, captains, lieutenants, firefighters and fire inspectors. The department has a hazardous materials support unit that assists various departments throughout the greater Story County area. The Ames Fire Department offers specialized services in high-angle rope, confined space, ice and trench rescue operations. Its apparatus includes engines, ladders, rescue boats, and medium-rescue and hazmat trucks. The fire department organizes a variety of Public education programs related to fire extinguisher and drills, as well as conducts station tours.
