The Salvation Army Indiana Division operates more than 25 corps and centers of service and thrift stores. Headquartered in Indianapolis, the organization offers classes in life skills, including budgeting, anger management, parenting and nutrition. Its social service center provides shelter to more approximately 1,200 women and children suffering from domestic violence. The parent organization, founded in 1865 to help the impoverished in London s East End, has functioned worldwide for more than 140 years. As of 2005, the Christian charity has expanded to include more than 100 countries, and the gospel is preached by its officers in more than 160 languages. It also offers crisis residential, intensive outpatient and residential rehabilitation programs.
