The Indiana State Police was established in 1921 as the Indiana Motor Vehicle Police. Today, it is a full-service law enforcement agency that operates through several divisions, including commercial vehicle enforcement, communication, criminal investigation, operation support, criminal justice data and human resources. The agency s laboratory division operates various forensic testing facilities that offer DNA collection and analysis services for a range of evidentiary material, as well as meet the accreditation standards of the American Society of Crime Laboratory Directors / Laboratory Accreditation Board. It also handles photography requests, crime scene support, and evidence security and tracking requirements through its laboratory management section. The Indiana State Police operates a memoriam and museum, as well as the Recruit Academy, which provides training in the areas of criminal law, psychology, vehicle operations, and impaired driver prevention and detection.
