History
The Francis Vigo Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution saved the house from destruction in 1909 to preserve the Harrison house and its legacy. The Grouseland Foundation formed in 1999 for the ongoing management, fundraising, restoration and stewardship of the home. The home has been in continuous operation since 1911 and remains a must stop on visits to historic, Vincennes, Indiana.

Wiliiam Henry Harrison, our nation's 9th President and son of Benjamin Harrison V, a signer of the Declaration of Independence, built this house from 1802-1804 to serve as the center for the territorial government, a family home and he fortified it like a fort for protection amidst hostilities. A tour of this original Federal home covers all three floors and a vast collection of military and Presidential memorabilia, Battle of Tippecanoe and War of 1812 artifacts, Harrison family pieces, period artwork and antiques. Sprecial tours and programming available upon request. Two candlelight tours are offered annually, the Saturday during Memorial holiday weekend and the first Friday in December for Christmas. The house is called the White House of the West and the Birthplace of Hoosier hospitality!
