History
Founded in 1991, the Athenaeum Foundation is a not-for-profit organization devoted to restoring the historic Athenaeum building, a 94,000 square foot building in downtown Indianapolis. Originally known as Das Deutsche Haus, the landmark's east wing was completed in 1898 by a group of German-American immigrants. Today, the Athenaeum Foundation seeks to further the building's founders' values through a variety of physical fitness, cultural, and intellectual events and programs. Athenaeum serves as a the gathering place of choice for residents and patrons in the Massachusetts Ave. District. The building is home home for the Rathskeller Restaurant and Biergarten, a YMCA center and the Young Actors Theatre. In addition, several meeting and conference rooms as well as a 350 seat capacity theater. The Athenaeum is open to the community for utilization during the day, and our five annual heritage events continue draw ever increasingly large crowds each year.
