The company serves nearly 73 million auto, fire, life and health policies in the United States and Canada. It also offers financial services products including banking and mutual funds. George J. Mecherle, a retired farmer, founded State Farm Mutual Automobile Insurance Company in 1922. It initially concentrated on meeting auto insurance needs of Illinois farmers through a mutual organization owned by the customers. In 1965, the company began marketing health insurance. State Farm Mutual Automobile Insurance Company is a mutual insurance company and as such does not have any shareholders. State Farm has more than 16,000 service agents throughout the United States and Canada.
