The Social Skills Place works with both parents and children to teach social, emotional and organizational skills in a structured environment. The program is designed to improve a child's social functioning, first within the group setting, then in the real world. Each group session lasts 45 minutes to an hour. The program lasts approximately 10 weeks, after which new students can join the group and current students can choose to stay on for the next 10-week program. In the fall of 2006, the Social Skills Place began using children who are well adjusted socially as volunteers in the groups. This allows for everyone to learn from each other. The volunteer children learn to help others at an early age, and the other children in the group get the chance to be around and interact with socially successful children.
