History
The Quadrangle Club was created in 1893 as a social club for the faculty of the newly established University of Chicago. As the Club outgrew its original home, the Barry Hotel, a dedicated clubhouse was built in 1896. 20 years later, the clubhouse and land were purchased by the University of Chicago in order to make way for the construction of Rockefeller Chapel. The clubhouse utilized by the Quadrangle Club today was designed by Chicago architect Howard Van Doren Shaw and opened 1922. While the Club still serves the faculty of the University of Chicago, it has expanded its reach to serve University staff, alumni, and members of the Hyde Park community as well.
