SouthStar Services serves adults with developmental disabilities such as mental retardation, epilepsy, cerebral palsy, autism and other substantial, chronic disabilities incurred before maturity. It provides services to more than 300 developmentally disabled adults, 21 of whom reside in its four CILA homes. With the support of the community, corporations and foundations, SouthStar provides choices and opportunities for persons with developmental disabilities that enrich their lives and maximize independence in the pursuit of vocation, community living and social integration. SouthStar Services was formed when a small group of people came together in 1950 to promote educational services for their mentally disabled children. As they matured, there was an increasing need for vocational services and in 1975, SouthStar opened its first training center.
