The Illinois State Geological Survey, also known as ISGS, is a division of the Illinois Department of Natural Resources. Operational for more than 100 years, the division offers earth science information to citizens and institutions. It provides earth science information related to the state's environmental quality, economic vitality and public safety. The division manages a staff of more than 150 scientists and technical support personnel that conduct basic and applied research in geology. It compiles geologic maps and gathers and manages geological data to provide information about the geology and mineral resources of the state to various industries and government agencies Illinois.
