SIU School of Medicine, also known as Southern Illinois University School of Medicine, is a federally assisted health care and educational organization that offers medical care, treatment and diagnostic services for individuals in central and southern Illinois. Established in 1970, it offers primary medical care, patient education and medication monitoring services. SIU School of Medicine conducts medical research studies that offer opportunities to improve existing biomedical and clinical care practices. With more than 1,150 staff members, it specializes in the areas related to neurology, obstetrics, gynecology, pediatrics, Alzheimer s disease care, psychiatry, surgery, and family and community medicine. Located in Springfield, Ill., the organization maintains more than 85 clinical and medical outreach programs for underprivileged and underserved individuals throughout Illinois. Additionally, it is accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education and its medical residency programs are accredited by the American Council for Graduate Medical Education.
