The Massachusetts Highway Department makes the policy decisions for road improvement projects on the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. It identifies roads and bridges that need repair, reconstruction and replacement in Massachusetts, as well as works to make the appropriate upgrades. The department supervises construction, performs on-site engineering, and implements maintenance and preventive maintenance programs. The Massachusetts Highway Department also generates proposals for maintenance and construction work and provides engineering support to cities and towns. It offers the Adopt-A-Highway, Adopt-A-Visibility Site and Sponsor-A-Highway programs. The department s also provides project design and recycling programs. The Massachusetts Highway Department is responsible for the planning, design, construction and maintenance of more than 9,500-lane miles of roadway and over 2,800 bridges. It is governed by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.
