Established in 1869, the DeKalb Fire Department provides emergency medical treatment for injuries and sudden medical problems and offers information and programs concerning fire safety. It operates a communication center that coordinates responses to fire and medical calls. The department s services include fire suppression, rescue, fire prevention and public education services. The DeKalb Fire Department is comprised of more than 55 sworn officers and civilian employees. It also maintains administration and operations divisions. It has a fire prevention bureau that is responsible for coordinating and conducting fire and life safety inspections and plan reviews for new developments related to hydrant and fire department connections and fire alarm systems. The department also operates a special team that is trained to respond to hazardous material incidents. It is located in DeKalb, Ill.
