The Belleville News-Democrat provides news and information to eight Illinois counties with circulation primarily in St. Clair and Southern Madison counties. The paper's investigative reporting has been featured on the CBS news program 60 Minutes, the NBC news program Dateline, ABC s Nightline, and in a 2003 article in Editor & Publisher called, 'Ten newspapers that do it right.' The News-Democrat is only one of two daily newspapers in Illinois and Missouri to grow net paid circulation eight years in a row, and in 18 of 20 years. The newspaper was founded in 1858 and has a circulation of more than 50,000 daily and 60,000 on Sundays. Since its founding, the newspaper has had a succession of owners. It was a family-owned newspaper from 1891 to 1972, until its purchase by Capital Cities/ABC. The newspaper is now part of the McClatchy Company media chain.
