The Office of the State Appellate Defender is a state agency, representing indigent persons on appeal in criminal cases when appointed by the Illinois Supreme Court, Appellate Court or Circuit Court. Based in Springfield, Ill., the office operates through five appellate court districts of Illinois. Its Capital Post-Conviction Unit, with offices in Chicago, Ill., represents death row inmates in post-conviction proceedings. The office also organizes a suite training programs in the topics of the new Illinois rules of evidence and Illinois Supreme Court update.
