American College of Chest Physicians, located in Northbrook, Ill., is a medical specialty society of physicians, surgeons, health professionals, and individuals with doctoral degrees. Its members specialize in several chest treatments, such as pulmonology, cardiology, cardiovascular and cardiothoracic surgery, hypertension, critical care and sleep medicine treatments. Founded in 1935, the society partners with several government agencies related with chest medicine, such as the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid, and Food and Drug Administration. It also advocates smoking cessation and prevention, regulation of tobacco products, federal funding for research, and several health care reform initiatives.
