American Academy of Sleep Medicine is a professional organization offering medical care to patients with sleep disorders. The academy is involved in the advancement of sleep research, and public and professional education through a variety of programs. AASM is engaged in educating medical practitioners, potential patients and the public about the relationship between sleep-related disorders and the general well-being of a person. The membership in the AASM is available in two forms, center and laboratory membership, and individual membership. The center and laboratory membership is available to all AASM-accredited sleep disorder facilities. Its members enjoy a variety of benefits, including a listing as an accredited member center on the AASM Web site. Individual membership is intended for clinicians involved in the diagnosis and treatment of patients with disorders of sleep and alertness, scientists involved in basic research in sleep mechanisms and illnesses, and other professionals who want to learn more about sleep disorders medicine.
