Puna has been a place of historical importance throughout the history of Hawaii. From the days of the monarchy, Puna provided agricultural and human support to the people of Hawaii. Around 5000 people lived in Puna from the time of the monarchy until the mid 1980s when the population grew to over 10,000 people. It has always been an hub for agriculture.
