Founded in 1960, the Oceanic Institute is an applied aquaculture research facility. It is located on a 56-acre site in Waimanalo, Hawaii. It is affiliated with the Hawaii Pacific University and offers the site for various research jobs, such as high-technology marine culture systems and pharmaceuticals resulting from marine biotechnology advances. It is also a federally funded deepwater upwelling project that provides access to cold water for varied species research. It provides research access in a wide range of fields, such as in feeds, larval rearing, growout, environmental conditions, animal health and marketing. Its aquaculture system management maintains the balance of the aquatic elements by calculating and implementing feeding, stocking, testing, water quality and harvesting systems. In addition, the Oceanic Institute specializes in fully integrated, end-to-end production systems for marine fish and shrimp.
