The State of Hawaii s Highways Division is a part of the Department of Transportation located in Hilo, Hawaii. The department works to provide a safe, efficient and accessible highway system through the utilization of available resources. It operates landscape, computer and staff services office, as well as motor vehicle safety office. The Department of Transportation is responsible to plan, design, construct, operate and maintain state facilities in all modes of transportation, including air, water and land. It coordinates with state, county and federal programs for maintaining the facilities, such as highways and linking roads. The Department of Transportation conducts the Hawaii Statewide Transportation Improvement Program, which is a multimodal transportation improvement program that is developed by utilizing existing transportation plans and policies and highway, transit and transportation programming processes.
