Foodland Super Markets was the first store in Hawaii to introduce a frequent shopper program, which now has more than 350,000 active members. Maurice J. Sullivan, an Irish immigrant, founded the supermarket chain in 1948 in Honolulu. The company expanded to Kauai in 1967, Maui in 1970 and Hawaii in 1971. Now, Foodland Super Market has nearly 30 stores throughout the Hawaiian Islands including its headquarters on Oahu. The chain s store brands include Sack N Save and Foodland. Since 1980, the supermarket chain has helped more than 300 public and private schools raise in excess of $6 million for computers, software, books and equipment through its Shop for Better Education program.
