Young is one of 16 middle schools for 6th through 8th grade students in the Atlanta Public Schools system. The school is known for its year-round Spanish instruction, creative writing classes, orchestra and band, according to Principal Thomas Kenner.
Named for educator and children's welfare advocate Jean Childs Young -- who passed in 1994 and was the wife of former Atlanta Mayor and U.S. Ambassador Andrew Young -- the school's mission is PRIDE: Provide Rigorous and Relevant Instruction to Develop Excellence in all students.
School officials renovated the 15-acre campus in late 2009 and 2010. The $22-million renovation included the addition of a new 500-seat auditorium, music wing, art wing, football field and track-and-field facilities.
Young's school colors are red and gold and school sports teams are known as the Wolves.
