Founded in 1937, the Georgia Department of Public Safety is responsible for the enforcement of traffic laws and safety rules. It oversees the day-to-day operations of the Georgia State Patrol, Capitol Police and Motor Carrier Compliance divisions. The department additionally enforces traffic regulations and investigates accidents and crashes throughout the state of Georgia. The Capitol Police division investigates criminal incidents and manages street closures for events. The division is responsible for patrolling the streets, as well as provides courtroom security for the Supreme Court and Court of Appeals in Georgia.
