The Georgia Tech Research Institute, called the "Solution Institution," is an applied research and development organization. The nonprofit institute, which is part of Georgia Institute of Technology, was founded in 1934 with three researchers and a $12,000 budget. Now the institute has more than 1,400 employees and performs more than $200 million in research and development each year. The institute works to solve technical problems that face government and industry around the world, and has developed technology such as the AMBER alert system for missing children. There are eight laboratories and 13 field offices, but the institute is headquartered on 14th Street in Midtown Atlanta. Security procedures are required for some visits to the institute.
