History
Designated in 2006, the story of the Arabia Mountain National Heritage Area begins 400 million years ago with the formation of massive granite outcrops called monadnocks. Today, Panola Mountain (one of the two major monadnocks in the AMNHA) is a designated National Natural Landmark because of the rare species that live on the untouched rock ecosystem. The AMNHA has seen thousands of years of human activity, including Native American trading and settlement along the South River. Following the Civil War, this area grew as a center of quarry operations; simultaneously, a group of African-Americans formed an enduring community that persevered in the face of adversity. Even later, a group of Trappist monks migrated here to build a home in the peace and seclusion of rural Georgia. Diverse and vibrant, the history of AMNHA is a story of people and nature living in a beautiful, unforgiving landscape.
