Sweat was established in March 2005 by two best friends dedicated to Miami's colorful scene long-time DJ and club/concert promoter Lauren ( Lolo ) Reskin and ex-WVUM DJ/current criminal defense attorney Sara Yousuf. Since then Sweat has played a vital role in instigating and promoting a renaissance of growth and activity in Miami's cultural landscape. After debuting to cheers all around, Sweat survived its first location being destroyed by Hurricane Wilma in October 2005 and moved into a small temporary warehouse space in the back of Churchill's. Sara left in 2006 to be a full-time Public Defender and new partner Jason Jimenez came on board in 2007 to help usher in a new era and location for Sweat. The shop is now better than ever in an expanded and fully-stocked storefront located at 5505 NE 2nd Ave., with the building's massive teal-and-white mural of alt music heroes making it hard to miss. Sweat's current location also brought the addition of a multi-purpose all ages event space, an organic coffee bar and cafe tables for users of the shop's free wi-fi. Sweat sells a wide variety of new and used LPs, CDs, DVDs, magazines, books, Kid Robot and other vinyl toys, local music, books and t-shirts, as well as a full range of delicious coffee and tea beverages and vegan snacks. Everything has been sourced to be organic and fair-trade whenever possible and all cups, napkins, etc. are recycled and later composted.
