Dr. Cohen is a diplomat of the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology and board certified in neurology with special qualification in child neurology. He earned his Bachelor of Science degree from Illinois Institute of technology and then a Ph.D. in biochemistry from Iola University in Chicago. Following that he did 5 years of research in neurology as an assistant professor of neurology at the Johns Hopkins University. Dr. Cohen graduated from the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine with his M.D. degree in 1982.
From 1982 to 1987 he was an intern and resident first in pediatrics and then in adult and pediatric neurology at the Johns Hopkins Hospital. He has published 36 scientific articles during his career and has participated as an investigator in over 50 clinical trials researching new treatments for dementia and other neurological conditions.
He came to St. Petersburg and started practice in 1987. He has been involved in teaching residents and medical students since then. He is founder and medical director of Suncoast Neurosciences Associates which is an independent clinical research Institute. He is also medical director of neurology services at Bayfront Medical Center. He is currently in private practice with Central Neurology and has six partners associated with him. His proudest accomplishments are being the father of his two daughters, one of whom is a realtor in Tampa and the other who is pursuing a Fellowship in Neuropsychiatry at University of Massachusetts.
Dr. Cohen’s philosophy is that an effective physician needs two personal qualities: compassion and humility. He tries to bring this into every patient encounter.
