Maternal Fetal Medicine is a subspecialty of obstetrics that focuses on diagnosing, treating and caring for women and unborn babies who are at risk of complications or illness during pregnancy or who have been diagnosed with a disease or other medical problem. Doctors who practice this specialty must complete an additional two to three years of fellowship study and training on top of their obstetrics degree. The specialists at Maternal Fetal Medicine of Southwest Florida work to alleviate fear and ensure a healthy pregnancy for mothers who have a pregnancy-related health concern. All referrals to our offices do not mean that a mother will have a difficult pregnancy or that the baby will have problems after birth. Whatever the reason for your visit, our professionals will work closely with a mother's regular obstetrician to determine if any problems exist. If there is an issue, our specialists will determine what can be done to resolve it. If a plan needs to be developed for the unborn child and mother, Maternal Fetal Medicine doctors will devise a treatment plan. Then the pregnant mother will visit our offices in Fort Myers or Naples - as well as seeing their regular doctor - throughout the course of their pregnancy for continuing care.
