The Marion County Solid Waste Department, located in Ocala, Fla., consists of five divisions, including recycling, litter control, collection, disposal and hazardous waste. It provides solid waste management services and operates a landfill that offers a range of other services, such as household hazardous waste collection, litter control and business recycling assistance. The department offers a household hazardous waste program for homeowners to dispose hazardous waste, such as lawn and garden chemicals, fertilizers, paints, strippers, thinners, propane cylinders and aerosol cans. The Marion County Solid Waste Department, in addition, offers a sharps disposal program that includes proper disposal of hypodermic needles that could become a hazard to the public if improperly thrown away. The program is designed to assist residents with certain illnesses, such as diabetes.
